The scientific study

Work in Italian fishing

Linee

From a research project meant to become a book, becoming a film instead, and then getting back to a book containing and discussing both research and the film.

In 2019, Fai Cisl (the trade union category supporting workers in the agri-food, environmental and fishing sectors) carried out a project called Porto Sicuro (Safe Harbor), a touring information campaign on the fishing sector.

This opportunity becomes favorable, within the context of the visits to the various ports, to set up a study on work in the fishing sector.

This is how, although there was no plan to make a documentary, let alone a film, the intuition was that of providing adequate equipment to do some shooting. This is not unusual, although fast-use and non-professional equipment is usually employed.

In addition to study purposes, the initial idea was still that of a promotional video to accompany the main product, namely the book that would host the results of the study.

From the very first trip it was clear though that the technical quality of the footage and the absolute and unrepeatable exceptionality of the situations (being aboard!) deserved the development of a much more ambitious and complex video product.

The film The Interview at Sea is entirely built on research material collected between 2019 and 2022. The complete results of the study and its evolution into a film will be gathered and discussed in a book which is currently being published.
